Using electricity rather than petrol, offering services rather than products, and designing self-driving software are all tricky for carmakers that have relied on selling vehicles with internal combustion engines for over a century. Faced with these challenges, they put the pedal to the metal in 2016 to provide the transport of the future. Tech giants such as Uber, a ride-hailing service, and Google, with big ambitions in self-driving cars, once seemed to have the upper hand. But carmakers have fought back, pushing deeper into transport services and speeding development of autonomous and electric vehicles.
