1. air one’s dirty laundry in public – discuss personal problems openly.从字面上可以看出是把脏衣服晒在公共场所，很少有人愿意把自己脏乱邋遢的一面展现在公众面前吧。就如同中国有句古话：家丑不可外扬。意思是一样一样一样的！

FA姐建议：这样的句型比较适合放在人物题中，描述人物的个性或职业特性（狗仔）

例如：

He is a very private person. If he has a problem in his family he doesn’t want to air his dirty laundry in public.

The paparazzi always air the dirty laundry of celebrities in public for a living.

 

2. back on one’s feet – financially or physically healthy again.字面意思是重新站起来，也可理解为东山再起。

FA姐建议：人物题中比较容易用到此句型，特别在某人经历过失败之后重振雄风的场景中； 事件题中关于business也适合此句型。

例如：

He was back on his feet and finally won the gold medal.

Since sales improved, he is doing better and he’s getting back on his feet.

 

3. all thumbs – clumsy, unable to fix things. 拇指相对于其他手指来说并不怎么灵活，所以当你十个手指都是拇指的时候，也就意味着你不够灵活，比较笨拙的意思。

FA姐建议：这样的表达方式比较适合放在事件题和物品题中，特别是和手工相关的话题，可以放心大胆用一用哦！

例如：

Don’t ask me to put that clock back together. I’m all thumbs.

I’m good at cooking, however I’m all thumbs when it comes to cleaning the kitchen.

 

4. backbone – courage. 字面意义为脊骨，是支撑人直立的重要部分，所以也作中坚力量、骨干力量之解。但在习语里它更作为一个抽象的意义——骨气。

FA姐建议：看到这个词的时候，FA姐脑海中立即闪现的是人物题常考的一个话题—— an adventurous person，这样的人绝对有backbone！

例如：

He has no backbone because he was afraid to reprimand her.

You’ve got to have enough backbone to be a member of the bungee jumping club.

 

5. ballpark figure – approximate amount. Ballpark也就是棒球场，figure可作人头解释。一个棒球场中的人数只能估算，所以ballpark figure就是大概数目的意思啦！

FA姐建议：口语中表述大概数目的时候可以用ballpark figure 来代替about... 或 approximately...

例如：

When I asked the contractor how much it would be to remodel the kitchen, he gave me a ballpark figure.

It costs me 3000 pounds as a ballpark figure to buy that GUCCI bag.

 

6. blow it – lose a chance, make a mistake. FA姐一直认为中西文化在某些方面是完全相通的，比如吹这个字，都表示错失良机或者（用**近比较流行的说法）凉了。

FA姐建议：这个习语可用来描述某个事件被搞砸了或者某人犯了什么错。

例如：

I knew I blew it when I forgot my lines in the play.

They all counted on me to win the battle， yet I blew it all up.

 

7. call someone’s bluff – have someone prove what he says. 在玩德州扑克的时候，经常会有玩家用虚张声势来赢牌，当然也会有更高段位的玩家直接叫牌或者摊牌来进行反击。这种时候我们通常就称之为call someone's bluff.

FA姐建议：生活当中用这个习语就是跟人摊牌或者让人证明自己。

例如：

I don’t think Bob knows as much as he says. I think we should call his bluff。

I called his bluff when he threatened to quit the job.

 

8. do the trick – be successful, achieve a good result. Trick 是诡计、花招的意思，do the trick有一种一招制敌的感觉，一般用在描述某事达成的关键所在。

FA姐建议：如果你想表达某个方法很管用的时候，请暂时抛开useful这样的词汇，选择do the trick吧。也许它会在你获得口语7分之时do the trick！

例如:

The recipe needs a little help. I think salt may do the trick.

He tried many different ways to stop smoking. Acupuncture finally did the trick.
